Recreation - Music and Performance
Music in the Mountains means many things to Western North Carolina residents and visitors.
In Weaverville enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, fine food and drink at Blue Mountain Pizza right in the center of town on Main Street. Live music of all types and "open mic" nights will bring a smile and a laugh or two - its a bright highlight in Weaverville's hot spots!
Further afield it is the classical performances of the Asheville Symphony, Asheville Lyric Opera, and Brevard Music Center, and it is the 80-year-young Mountain Dance & Music Festival honoring renowned native Bascom Lamar Lunsford and celebrating bluegrass and other traditional formats.
The LEAF Festival brings together everything from flutists to performance poets, and the Keowee Chamber Concerts and Asheville Chamber Music Society offer classical and contemporary music for small ensembles. Those who enjoy a traditional jam session will want to drop by Mrs. Hyatt’s house any Thursday evening to hear some of the region’s most accomplished fiddlers play with guitarists, bassists, and toe-tapping dulcimer artists.
Dine at the Fiddlin’ Pig while a gospel quartet plays, or enjoy Caribbean and African American specialties during the Goombay Festival each August.
Folk Heritage Committee
The Folk Heritage Committee, an all volunteer committee operating under the umbrella of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Community Betterment Foundation, produces two celebrated mountain traditions in Asheville, North Carolina: Shindig on the Green and the Annual Mountain Dance and Folk Festival.
Both events feature old timers, as well as the newest generation of traditional and mountain string bands, ballad singers, and big circle mountain dancers and cloggers, resulting in fun-filled and authentic evenings enjoyed by kith and kin of all ages.
